About Us
The Swedenborg Library in Chicago, IL, is dedicated to practical spirituality. We are affiliated with the Swedenborgian Church of North America. The library’s collection includes the work of 18th-century Swedish scientist and theologian Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772) among its spiritual-topic books. The library sponsors educational programs and workshops for the public. We are open most Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and prior to scheduled programs or by appointment. Meet Our Team

Karen feil
Library Director
Karen leads the Swedenborg Library with a passion for spiritual exploration and community engagement. She is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for all. She has been a member of the Library since 1980, and became a Licensed Pastor with the Swedenborgian Church of North America in 2017, with a certificate in Swedenborgian Studies from the Center for Swedenborgian Studies in Berkeley, CA. She holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Chicago, reflective of a previous 32-yr career in consumer marketing.

Program Director & Resident Scholar
Dell is a PhD candidate in Western Esotericism at the University of Amsterdam, and an ordinand of the Swedenborgian Church of North America. With a masters degree in Folklore, and a love of languages, Dell brings a breadth of knowledge and resources to the Library's programming and translation projects. As a public theologian, Dell offers interpretations of Swedenborg for contemporary readers, and service to the international community of Swedenborg scholars.
The Chicago Temple Building (77 W. Washington St.) is home to the First United Methodist Church at the SE corner of Clark St. The Swedenborg Library is on the 17th floor of this building opposite Daley Plaza. A BMO Bank is on the first floor at the corner, for a visual landmark when visiting us.
The Swedenborg Library is located on the 17th floor of 77 W. Washington St., on the southeast corner of Clark St. and Washington St. in Chicago’s Loop, directly opposite Daley Plaza (The BMO Bank is the landmark you will notice at street level.) We are one block from the Washington stops of the Red and Blue Lines, and two blocks from the Clark/Lake stop of the Green, Brown (Washington-Wells or Clark/Lake stop), and Orange Lines. The #22 bus stop at Randolph/Washington is 1/2 block from us. There is road work being done on Clark St. south of our location, so on-street parking is a little more difficult to find. Best bet for parking in Chicago’s Loop area: check ParkWhiz.com or SpotHero.com for rates at Chicago Loop-area lots for the date/time you plan to visit. Most lots have lower rates for after 5:00 PM entry, weekends, and before midnight exit. We use the Self-Park at 172 W. Madison (near Wells St.) or the Poetry Garage (also on Madison St. west of the Swedenborg Library location).
